Life Vests

First salmon day Tyne, all ladies wearing a life vest

First salmon day Tyne, all ladies wearing a life vest

Because ladies fishing hold events on still (boats), rivers and sea I’ve been asked my thoughts about life vests. As you all know the safety of all ladies attending our events is paramount for the organisers, and is discussed at planning stage. I’m a keen advocator of life jackets especially on locations where there is fast, deep running water and you tend to wade a little bit further to cast your rod.

Tweedswood for example, Kevin the ghillie always stresses whether we are grayling or salmon fishing that life jackets must be worn, when we’ve attended events at Tweedswood we all wear life vests as standard. Our first salmon trip on the Tyne we all had life vests, which I managed to borrow from kind friends .

I’ve been contacted by one of my fishing friends who has asked if any ladies would like to order an automatic life vest with built in fly vest, so you have pockets to pop your flies in etc. It’s called the new Wavehopper Inflatable Fly Vest Fishing Lifejacket, designed  to be a practical buoyancy device, priced within the reach of every angler. So if your wading large salmon rivers or boat fishing on a reservoir, a Lifejacket gives you the peace of mind and functionality.

I am trying to get sponsorship/funding at the moment for some life vests, if you know anyone who would like to offer funding for this important and sometimes forgotten piece of kit please let me know. (we will promote the company)

If you are interested in buying a life vest please contact myself annefishing@yahoo.co.uk

Today we were privileged to fish the water owned by Lord Lothian.

This has to be one of the most memorable places I have visited and had the pleasure of fishing. The beat is overlooked by Lord Lothian’s beautiful home, Monteviot house, the river Teviot graciously curves past his manicured gardens. There are few places where one can experience magnificent landscapes, whilst standing in fabulous salmon and grayling river.

We met at 10.00am to find that the ghillies hut (which is a shed) had been transformed with tables, chairs, table cloth, mini cooker, picnic baskets, china mugs and candles lit. Over coffee and cake we laughed at the candelabra I’d bought and checked the barbless flies from Paul little.

Thank you Marion for the supberb lunch. Cheers

The morning was spent trying to locate Grayling, Cliff was using a long trotting rod, we used a variety of techniques from Czech nymphing to standard fly fishing. Sadly the grayling were thinly distributed. We fished pools, under the bushes, streamy water, and fast running on a variety of coloured, weighted nymphs. Walking back for lunch over the bridge we enjoyed the sight of about a 15lb salmon resting in a pool below us, fabulous. The afternoon Cliff and myself had Grayling on our hooks (Cliff using maggots, myself using a nymph pink shrimp),  I need to master getting them out of the current quickly because it feels like you’ve hook Houdini

Lunch was memorable, yet another dish from our award winning cook Marion. I can’t express our thanks enough from the ladies for Marion’s mouth watering cooking. The goodies in the picnic basket resembled opening a Fortnum and Mason hamper.

This is the first event Trish has organised herself. The hard work from Trish during the last 2 weeks is outstanding, visiting the beat last week 3 times, searching for grayling, speaking to Cliff on techniques.  It just shows you how much work goes  into the trips to make them enjoyable and a success. Thank you Trish.

Grayling fishing is truly a delicious way to spend one’s time with fantastic company, great food and a memorable, spectacular location.

We are looking at organising a salmon day on the Monteviot beat during summer. Any ladies interested, beginners welcome, equipment available. Contact annefishing@yahoo.co.uk

Paul Procter Orvis Grayling Fishing

Paul Procter Orvis Grayling Fishing

Hi everyone, glad to see Paul Procter is back from his trip to New Zealand. Check out his blog to find about his trip. I know he’s busily writing away for magazines at the moment, so readers of the mags Paul writes for are soon in for a treat.

We’re hoping to get a trip organised with Paul. I will be uploading photos from our last successful day with Paul on the Wear. Had a great time, Paul introduced the ladies to spey casting.

The ladies are off grayling fishing this weekend, Trish’s is the organiser and we’ve been on the phone to Paul getting some tips and advice. Thank you Paul and welcome back, though its a little bit colder than what your used to in NZ

Simms ladies shirts bought in the UK

Simms ladies shirts bought in the UK

As many of you will know  i love wearing clothing from manufacturers who produce fishing clothing for women. There are two main companies that spring to mind Orvis and Simms in the UK who rightly see the female fishing market place as a growth area.

I do find it quite condescending when manufacturers use members of staff who say silly comments such as they’ve finally found something that fits, and are prepared to wear mens sizes that do look too big on the photos….just to get a sale from the UK female market place. When will they learn and how disappointing for us women that this is done to make us buy a brand.

Enough of my ranting, as you know i’m always keen to promote companies that stock female clothing such as the following.

Ladies if we can just start asking for womens clothing, I know Vicky at Game Fishing Supplies is trying her best to stock ladies clothing….great news Vicky….when will manufacturers start doing the same, you have the money for market research and some of you even have female staff, such a cost efffective simple business  exercise that will bring dividends into your companies from PR and Brand loyalty from a growing market place.
