Junior Introduction Days

S&TA introduction to salmon fishingThe last few months have been rather busy for the Ladies Fishing coaches, not only with our charity fund raising days for Casting For Recovery UK & Ireland, Salmon Days, Chatton Trout Days, and also our commitment to encourage young people to try fishing.

Cliff, Anne, Greame and Keith with help from young angler Phillippa Hake run the very popular Under 17 Club at Witton Castle Lakes, monthly events to introduce young people to fly fishing. The morning session is free of charge and includes; learning to cast a single handed rod, information and advice on water craft, flies, knots, countryside code etc. Every young person attending has so far passed the first of the CAST Awards Level 1 and two members have past their level 2.  There is also talks from Junior Angling Talent Pathway finalists and our Under 17 member who is now an England junior, Ben Morris.

After lunch everyone goes fishing for a small fee of £5 C/R or £7.50 take one fish home. We have had a lot of success in the afternoon fishing sessions with young people fishing everything from blobs to drys and catching fish too, which has resulted in a good number of entries for the Junior Trout Masters competition from Trout Fisherman magazine. Read more about the days.

Level 1 & 2 sucessCliff has been working in partnership with Food Nation, thanks to the help of Ladies Fishing member Sarah Iveson. Pupils from Newcastle schools have been scaling up their fishing knowledge as part of a special activity programme to inspire them to think more about where their food comes from. Children were taught everything from baiting up a hook and casting their line, to reeling in a hooked fish and understanding how to treat the fish as humanely as possible – read more.

We have been working with the Northumberland branch of the Salmon & Trout Association. Cliff, Anne and photographer Helen Jobson spent a day in May on the River Tyne at Eltringham beat introducing young people to salmon fishing – see photographs. During the Summer holidays Cliff has organised a series of trout days at Derwent Reservoir introducing young people to trout fishing using all methods – read more.

Where possible we try to offer free places for young people on Ladies Fishing Salmon days, we are pleased to announce that we have managed to offer this on 3 events so far this year.

We are off to the CLA Game Fair this weekend at Blenheim Palace – please come and say hello to our coaches in the Tuition and Rod Testing section.
