Dee Ladies Introduction Day June

The girlsIt’s been a busy few months at Ladies Fishing with monthly salmon events along with our fund-raising charity days for Casting For Recovery UK & Ireland.

Last year Lucy Campbell’s fishing beat, Altries Fishing, and coach Anne Woodcock, were a lot in the River Dee Auction. Lot 33 a ladies day fishing on the Dee in 2014 – with all money raised from this day going towards the Dee’s programmes to improve the rivers restoration and community education.

Experienced angler Doreen from Marcliffe Hotel & Spa and three of her golfing friends Anne, Pat and Suzanne were the recipients of the lot, kindly bid by Dee supporter Stewart Spence, owner of Marcliffe Hotel and international angler himself.

Glen talking flies in the bothyThe day started with lots of laughter, golf talk, waders, along with why didn’t Stewart bid for a spa day. After introductions – Dee fly specialist and international fly dresser Phil Glendinning discussed flies and river conditions, including where certain flies would be used. The ladies received a selection of flies suitable to use during the day, Thank you Phil. I was impressed by the ladies passion for the river and knowledge of it too – thank goodness our own entomologist Cliff Johnston was with me – answering in-depth questions on fly life, salmon migration etc. We could have spent all morning talking about the river, it was fascinating listening to the ladies and their passion for the river and Deeside.

Finally we got the ladies outside and after our equipment was sprayed to kill any Gyrodactylus salaries a quick trip across to the other bank the ladies were introduced to the double handed rod and casting whilst Doreen went fishing with head ghillie Kevin Flemming. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed their casting, aptly behind them was the golf course. All too soon it was back to the bothy and lunch – kindly supplied by Marcliffe and Doreen – thank you it was yummie.  Ladies Fishing coaches have been very spoilt this year on our salmon days.

Ready to go fishingIn the afternoon the ladies used their flies from Phil Glendinning. We knew the ladies had a lovely day – when we said i’m afraid last cast of the day – and they all said the time had gone so quickly. I said  “is fishing now as good as a day at a health spa?” – they laughed. The day was rounded off perfectly with tea with our host Lucy Campbell.

Thank you to Doreen for bidding for the day – and her feedback “We had a great day and your enthusiasm was infectious so I am sure there will be fishing booked somewhere soon.

Susanne has already informed me this morning that she almost managed to knock out her husband in the middle of the night as she was perfecting her cast in her sleep. Gets to you doesn’t it ?”

The girls are still talking about their day on the river. Suzanne however is now incorporating her casting tuition into her golf swing!  So much so that her husband asked ‘What was THAT’ as she drove off the tee. She had to admit that she didn’t quite know herself !”

Anne Woodcock is currently organising ladies days on the Dee with the Dee Rivers Trust for 2015 – if you would like more information about Dee 2015 days please email
