International Women’s Day

Dame Kelly HolmesToday is International Women’s day and what better way to spend it than with a group of women discussing how to get women and girls into sport in 2012 and beyond.

There were presentations from celebrities and leading females in sport from Dame Kelly Holmes, Jill Scott, Andrea Congreaves etc and also from women who run sport in the local Newcastle community.

It was refreshing to listen to presentations by female coaches, athletics and referee’s from male dominated sports such as football, rugby, basketball and weightlifting and how they are engaging females into their chosen sport.

The day has filled me with ideas on how to engage more women and juniors into the sport of angling. Attending presentations from making a difference, girls for the future, it’s not all about sport etc, I have met some inspirational people.

Dame Kelly Holmes said ‘there would be no Olympian’s if it was not for club sports and coaches. Behind her there was a team of people that believed in the dream of a gold medal’

Kelly Holmes quote reminded myself of our group, without the coaches giving up their time free of charge, supplying the equipment and believing in the dream their would be no Ladies Fishing.

Thank you to the Angling Development Board for the invite to this inspirational event for women.

  1. We at Crocodile Bay Lodge, Costa Rica want to encourage and support the
Women Anglers of the world. We would like to hear from you your comments
on how we can make a difference exposing more females to a sport that until recent years has been predominatly a male sport. My 6 year old niece absolutely loves to fish
and I would like for her to have some friends to continue fishing with long after I am gone! Whenever I get to see her,she politely reminds me how she caught more and bigger fish! What a Beautiful Day it was.
