Ladies Fishing go classic at Chatton Trout Fishery, Northumberland
The ladies gathered at 9.30am on Mothering Sunday, to spend the morning fishing with the Chatton Trout Fisheries competition team, enjoying one to one tuition, discussing techniques, lines, types of fly to fish, retrieval techniques, competition tactics etc.
Dawn Dixon who has now made her own sinking line as a result of a master casting class with Lee Cummings, commented “to spend time with competition anglers and understand how they fish and to test my home made shooting line and get their opinion will help me when I go fishing on my own”
In the afternoon the ladies who are all beginner fly tiers, tied their first classic salmon fly with a little help from Paul Little.
Paul said “I was approached by ladies fishing because they wanted to tie flies. This is the first group of women I know in the UK who organise fishing days and days to tie flies, including classic salmon flies”
The ladies tied the The Silver White from how to dress Salmon Flies by Dr. T. E. Pryce-Tannatt. Paul tied the fly using step to step easy instructions for the ladies to follow, supplemented with notes including photographs. The ladies found the wing and the cheeks of the fly the most challenging part.
Paul asked Chatton Team member and fly dresser Jim Tuck to judge the ladies flies. All the ladies flies were tied to a high standard and Jim was impressed that this was a beginners group. The winning fly in Jim’s opinion had the right balance on the tail, including the correct number of ribs, so well done to Anne Woodcock with Vicky Bell a close second.
Huge Thank you to Paul Little, Jim Tuck and the Chatton Team
