Comments from the ladies about the day we had with Lee last September
“I think Lee is a “genius”. “The way he explained everything really made sense”
“I drove home on Saturday feeling really motivated and determined to improve. If I have one regret, it is that I didn’t meet Lee on the very first day that I decided to take up fly fishing – but better late than never! I would be very interested in attending a 2 day master class, especially with spey casts with a single handed rod.”

Marion yesterday informed me that one of the flies from the photo enclosed was the fly that hooked her the kelt during yesterday’s fishing trip with Trish.
The event at Chatton Trout Fishery on saturday 13th March, we have Paul Little showing us all how to tie flies, though this time it will be in small groups of one or two ladies. Paul has offered the choice of tying a salmon or trout fly in the morning. Example of a classic salmon fly Turkish Delight.
Paul has offered to teach us all how to tie a classic salmon fly with a married wing in the afternoon. Any lady who would like to join us and tie a classic salmon fly please contact me to book your space annefishing@yahoo.co.uk
There is no additional cost. Paul is providing all materials and equipment free of charge. Thank you Paul
Anyone who saw Marion’s shopping list at Game Fishing Supplies on Saturday would realise that she is a determined lady in 2010, the net that she purchased was virtually the size of Marion.
Today at work i received a text message, actually it was my first video link text of about 5 seconds. About a 7lb fish in a net, with a lady getting the hook out looking like Marion, this was closely followed by a text from Trish saying it’s a kelt, so nothing to shout about. Well i think it is, Marion caught the fish on the fly tied by one of our ladies, before Marion started fishing today she even reduced the barbs in case she caught a kelt and the fly was difficult to remove. Its only February and Marion has the season ahead of her, this is the lady who was going to give up the double handed rod……were proud of you Marion for having the determination to improve you skills and fishing in weather chaps would not even venture out in.
Vicky is holding a ladies day saturday 27th March with aapgai master casting instructor Jim Fearn on the Tyne. Anyone wishing to book a place contact Vicky at Game Fishing Supplies E: vicky@ian-woods.co.uk
It was great to see so many ladies at Game Fishing Supplies, Morpeth open day on Saturday, travelling from as far as the Scottish Borders to support Ian and Vicky’s first shop open day. Paul Little demonstrated woven flies, dry flies, spiders, hairwing salmon flies and the star of the show, a fully dressed Silver Wilkinson. These flies were raffled off and the winning ticket was pulled out of the hat by Paul at the end of the day, the winner has kindly donated them to the online auction, Paul’s flies and his tablets of wax raised £126.00 for The Grace House North East’s Children’s Hospice.
Cliff was entertaining us all outside with a casting demonstration on the river Wansbeck, including helping us all with improving our casting techniques. Whilst waiting for Cliff to help us all, myself and Sarah chatted to a gentleman visiting from Aberdeen, whose daughter is a salmon fisher lady on the Dee. Alistair is off to Mexico in March with Orvis Consultant and instructor Ben Dixon, we hope you have a lovely time and catch a Grand Slam of Tarpon, Permit, Snook and Bonefish.
Cliff also ran entomology sessions during the day on the river Wansbeck and the comment made by most people was how small the nymphs are, and the flies that they were using were far too big.
The most common insects with upright wings were the large Brook dun (ecdyonurus torrentis). Large Dark Olive (baetis rhodani). They were of different sizes, not all the same generation and some were ready to hatch. The pale watery Dun (baetis fuscatus). Large number of tipulidae, a relative of tipula-maxima daddy long legs. Cliff commented “the river is a good healthy river”
I am lucky to be Cliff’s partner on the Wear River Fly Project, i will be the one kick sampling, who said fishing is not great exercise !
Sunday was spent casting single and double handed rods on the Wear with Paul and Cliff, i have finally got the right line for my Hardy Angel, including a Hardy TE reel, instead of the demon reel and its casting dream like, its so important the reel balances with the rod paul commented “its a very tidy setup, nice line for the rod too” and what a difference its makes, it now casts beautiful.
I’m now looking forward to Saturday so i can try my set up with the girls Grayling fishing, thank you Trish for organising the Grayling day.
