The Queen of Port charms the Fisherman’s Lodge

Thursday evening driving through the peaceful and secluded Jesmond Dene, we followed the tranquil river Ouseburn flowing gracefully to our left and reached our destination in the heart of a picturesque leafy woodland valley called the Fisherman’s Lodge.

For those who are unaware of the culinary reputation of one of Newcastle’s longest established restaurants, the Fisherman’s Lodge is one of those restaurants local people like to keep a secret.

Waiting at the entrance of the lodge was Marta with her friendly, warm, sunshine welcome. She had invited the ladies from LF to a wine tasting with dinner.

Marta had chosen the chic and contemporary restaurant to compliment her old world wine with ‘new world attitudes’. We were not to be disappointed.

During the tasting Marta and her partner Kevin captivated the audience with a selection of 12 hand picked contemporary Portuguese wines from sparkling to full bodied reds and a selection of fine white and aged Tawny ports.  Marta’s charm and indepth knowledge was evident from the start.

Marta’s father is a cork farmer, supplying corks to a wide number of wineries. From a little girl she has felt close to the world of  Portuguese wine. After studying geography and environmental studies at University in Holland, she returned home to work in the Portuguese wine industry mapping and analysing vineyard regions. Few people are better qualified to talk about which grape varieties grow best and where in Portugal.  Marta’s partner, Kevin compliments her with equal depth of knowledge and enthusiasm. (they met when they were studying geography in Holland)

They both talked about wine regions, the history of Portugal and its wine producers. Bringing life to a country and vibrancy to its wine on a wet November evening in England. Tips and ideas flowed, from how to serve, dishes to compliment and how to make a ‘Portonic’, the aperitif of summer.

The fisherman’s lodge staff were attentive during the tasting with appetising canapes from fish, steak tartare to baby toffee apples complimenting the fine selection of wine, including white and tawney port.

By the end of the tasting my 10/10 had increased to 15/10 and my companion said he was running out of ticks, he had given so many he had no spaces left on his wine tasting notes.

The evening concluded with a 4 course Portuguese meal chosen by Marta in the restaurant. Mouth watering flavors and smells tingled the taste buds and Portuguese wines were quaffed with the meal, chosen by Marta and Kevin.

Its now saturday afternoon and I have not stopped smiling. Such an enjoyable evening, fabulous wines from Portugal, fantastic host and hostess, great food and wonderful company.   1. uau…. I have no words to describe how grateful I am to find a great friend in the North East of England as Anne it is! I read all the post you wrote about Marta Vine and the Fishermans Lodge my face was smilling and my eyes brilliant with enthusiasm it is so so nice to see you supporting me, kevin and our wines! Thanks over and over again!
