Hi Ladies, I posed a question to a well known UK fishing magazine last month asking when they would feature a women on their front cover.  Enclosed is their response to Ladies Fishing.

Tried it once, back in 1996. Pretty brunette, long, bare arms in a fishing waistcoat… remember it well. Thought: “with a huge male readership, this issue’s sales are going to be sky high”. So, can anyone tell me why it was the worst seller ever?

During 2012 the focus is to promote fellow females across the UK, offer assistance to females & groups who would like to hold events or start a female fishing group. Ladies Fishing have experienced and qualified casting instructors from AAPGAI, GAIA & ADB coaches covering all disciplines, we now feel in a position to offer advice &  assistance.

During 2012 we will be raising much needed funds for breast cancer charity Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland to continue their great work providing fishing retreats for women who have, or have had breast cancer. We have secured prestigious venues in the North East and major angling companies have provided assistance & equipment free of charge.

Police are appealing for anyone to come forward who may have information about the break-in at Chatton Trout Fisheries in the north of the county.

Thank you to the top referring sites in 2011, in particular Chatton Trout Fishery and Fly Fisher Girl.  Most visitors came from The United Kingdom. The United States & Canada were not far behind.

Ladies & juniors do you fancy trying beach fishing for flaties on a Northumberland beach between christmas and the new year?

Paul Fenech the features editor from Sea Angler magazine will be joining us on Thursday 29th December along with Don Coe and Level 2 sea coach Cliff Johnston. 

There will be equipment and bait provided for ladies who do not have this specialist equipment, including tuition. Within the group we have ladies who already go sea fishing, Paul and Don will be on hand to offer specialist knowledge.  Paul Fenech is also a competition angler.

Cliff will be bringing his campervan….hot soup/drinks will be available during the day, including somewhere if your cold.

What to bring: warm clothes, waterproofs or waders, hats, gloves, glasses…

Cost: equipment & tuition is free, there may be a small charge of £3.00 for bait.

This event is subject to weather and sea conditions.

Scanning magazines, adverts, fishing forums, brochures and catalogues….you’ll quickly find that there is a lot of choice and jargon. Which for a beginner is bewildering !

So we thought we would ask our friends in the industry by posting a question on their Facebook pages on Saturday. Our question to everyone was….

“any ladies and juniors who are thinking of trying fishing for the first time in 2012 in the UK what rod/reel/line would you recommend….”

Weight ‘wt’ weight does not refer to how much the rod itself weighs but to the weight of the line the rod was designed to cast.

Action of the rod. There are 3 basic actions, or sometimes called flex.

Slow/full flex.

Medium/mid flex.

Fast/tip flex.

Slow action rods are more forgiving.

Mr Peter Gray international fisheries consultant was the after dinner speaker. Peters work is documented in his book  ’Swimming against the tide’ Restoring Salmon to the River Tyne. His pioneering hatchery work at Kielder and his great achievements in dramatically improving the stocks of salmon on the River Tyne – to the extent that it is now, once again, a world class salmon river. Peter’s talk was informative and educational.

The ladies fishing group donated a superb prize of a Classic framed salmon fly courtesy of Paul Little and an invite to the first ladies day in 2012 courtesy of Chatton Trout Fishery. I have spoken to Ali and Paul this morning and they are looking forward to meeting Nick Craigs and his children in March.

Head Coach Cliff Johnston the Treasurer of the Northumberland branch organised the sale of raffle tickets and confirmed that £1500 had been raised through raffle ticket sales and an auction. Thanks must go to Carole Sanderson who worked tirelessly collecting prizes for the raffle. The money raised will be used in the S&TA Northumbrian branch junior introduction to fishing days. LF head coach Cliff Johnston works on these very successful days organised by Carole Sanderson.

We had to share this with you, talented junior anglers Matthew fishing with his mum Vicky Bell at Chatton Trout Fishery. Matthew is using the fly he tied that day with Paul Little during the ladies fishing event.

Tight Lines Matthew…..

The day started with fly dressing from Paul Little. The group tied 2 flies under the instruction of Paul; the gold head and green head black tadpole. Dawn and Marion informed the group that black flies were currently fishing well at Chatton.

Whilst fly dressing was in progress Cliff & Anne were setting rods up for beginners outside. Casting tuition followed where the group were split into beginners and advanced casting. Beginners were taught the roll cast, over head cast, then both casts were joined together into a roll cast with a pick up into a over head, and finally shooting line.  Advanced instruction from AAPGAI master Paul Little centred round techniques and perfecting the double haul.

After a coffee break everyone fished till lunch time…where ladies lost and caught fish. Junior angler 6 year old Matthew lost a fish with his own tied fly, so he resorted to stalking techniques. See photograph

After lunch Anne & Cliff received some CPD training (continuous personal development) from Paul Little, demonstrating and teaching techniques for the belgium cast, ready for a salt water trip later this month to Mexico.

Paul gave an impromptu casting lesson for a complete beginner who arrived at the fishery wishing to find out more about fishing. She left a very happy lady and will be joining us on our next ladies event.

Fishing during the afternoon was difficult, very bright conditions and fish not in a taking mood. Near to the end of the day Alison (experienced sea angler) and new to trout fishing caught her first rainbow trout, under the guidance of Level 1 coach Marion. Well done…photo attached

The day ended with some great comments from everyone. Huge thanks to Paul & Cliff for their casting & fly tying classes, recurring comment from everyone was about the quality and depth of tuition/knowledge. We are so lucky at Ladies Fishing to have a AAPGAI Master & GAIA/UKCC Level 1/2/3 course lecturer.
